Slip roads, footpaths & medians: Four Dwarka e-way links set for makeover

Project Likely To Be Ready In 9 Months

Gurgaon: Work to repair and give a facelift to four key sector roads that connect hundreds of residents living in the area to the Dwarka Expressway will begin by this month’s end.
GMDA officials said on Monday that altogether, a 5.7km network will be renovated. These are the dividing sector roads – those between 103 and 106, 102A and 103, 102 and 102A, and 106 and 109.

The project, estimated to cost the authority Rs 52.6 crore, is expected to be completed in nine months.
Redevelopment includes recarpeting of the 12.5m main carriageways, construction of central verges and surface drains. Footpaths as wide as 2.5 metres, infrastructural improvements on intersections, slip roads, streetlight repairs and installations are also part of the revamp.

“Work for upgradation and strengthening of four roads linked to the Dwarka Expressway will be started by the end of this month. Around 5.7km of road network in these sectors will be redeveloped. We will reconstruct the existing carriageway along with footpaths and drains. Once completed, it would ensure smooth flow of traffic and provide a better riding experience to commuters,” said Amit Godara, executive engineer of GMDA.
The official said that the revamp will also improve connectivity with the upcoming Sheetla Mata Medical College and Hospital in Sector 102.
With most of Old Gurgaon densely packed and chaotic, the sectors along the expressway are where the city’s urban population is increasingly shifting to. These ‘new sectors’ have dozens of high-rises and gated societies, but civic infrastructure hasn’t caught up with the area’s growth.
Most of the sector roads in the area were constructed by the erstwhile HUDA (now HSVP) in 2014. They were handed over to GMDA in 2018. Currently, they are dotted with potholes and uneven patches, making travel on them a painful ride for motorists and pedestrians. GMDA approved the revamp project in June last year.
Residents on Monday said that redevelopment of these roads was long overdue.

“Due to lack of regular maintenance, these roads are in shambles. The situation becomes more dangerous at night as some stretches don’t have streetlights. We are happy that authorities are finally paying attention to this issue. There’s also a high-tension pole standing in the middle of one road, and it needs to be removed,” said Sunil Sareen, a resident of Imperial Gardens in Sector 102.
Surender Tehlan, who also lives in the sector, said the recarpeting of the dividing road between sector 102 and 102A was “crucial” as traffic on the stretch was likely to increase due to construction of a nearby underpass.
